CALLENDER SCHOOL

Location: Newport, Rhode Island
Architect & Designer: George Ranalli
Project Architect: Paula Beall
Project team: Mark Mascheroni, Turan Duda

The Callender School Renovation proposed a project to convert a National Register Historic Landmark schoolhouse into six units of housing.

All the new construction is gathered toward the center of the building , allowing the major living spaces to occur in the space between the old and the new. These spaces are fronted with a facade behind which are all the small scale private rooms of necessity. The collective assembly of these facades, grouped around the public space of the central hall of the old school forms a city within the building symbolic of the community of dwellers that exist within.
